Six years later, I’m leaving. (But really, I’m not going anywhere.)

Yep, that’s right. As of November 1st I will be leaving the full-time employment of The Creative Coast.  Pretty crazy, right?

The transition for The Creative Coast to an independent, self governing organization is complete, and in the end I’m not going to be a part of it. There are lots of reasons, but ultimately it comes down to what many big decisions come down to: money.

The Creative Coast has enjoyed generous support from three sources over its six year history, SEDA, the City of Savannah and Chatham County. Sometimes not everyone can pitch in, but we’ve made it stretch every year and done great things because of it.

That will continue to be the case in 2011.  The economy has been a challenge for everyone — Thousands of organizations of all shapes and sizes have had to shift, push, pull, stretch and squish themselves in order to adapt to the changing economic environment and ever fluctuating market conditions. The Creative Coast is no different. Several weeks ago, we learned that we are now facing a significant new budgetary reality that we had not fully anticipated and a tough decision had to be made.

That’s the bad news.

The good news is that The Creative Coast is moving forward with a very capable and enthusiastic board and executive director who for the first time has not only the responsibility, but the authority, to make decisions.  As for Mr. Hodesh, I can’t think of anyone better to lead the charge than Jake.  He’s got more passion and energy than almost anyone I know, and I think he’ll take this organization to great places. Seriously, watch out.

Obviously, I will continue to be a close friend to the organization. I may even serve as a consultant on a part-time basis to help usher some of the more technical changes that will no doubt be taking place in the next several months. And, Cari Clark and I will still host our popular monthly cSpot gatherings, and Creative Coast will continue to be a sponsor.

I’m proud to have played a meaningful part in the evolution of such a dynamic and inspiring organization. I’ve been around since the beginning of the Miller days – I was his first hire – and it’s been a wild, crazy ride that I wouldn’t trade for anything.  Over the past six years, we’ve done a lot of very good things, and we have created the foundation upon which this new team can build.

I’ve learned so much, and the people that I’ve met and the connections that I’ve made with many of you have been the best part of the job.  So, thank you.

In terms of what’s next for me, I’m going to throw my hat in the consulting ring…applying what I’ve learned and doing what I love: using technology and the power of the web to help organizations kick ass, take names, and shout from the rooftops.

From web product development and project management, to harnessing social media to cultivate communities and building a successful online PR machine, I’ve acquired a wide range of skills that will be useful in helping organizations achieve their goals.  I hope and expect to work with many of you in the very near future.

So that’s it.  I’m going to miss this, but like I said, I’m not going anywhere. (For those of you who have been around a while, that may sound familiar.)

See you very soon.

Peace out, yo.
